Mark Lichterman Consulting: Helping Nonprofits and Foundations Thrive for Generations to Come

 Focused on Advancing Your Mission

My professional life, as both a development professional and attorney, has been focused on  helping organizations like yours to find smart and creative ways to serve your current mission and to imagine and implement an even brighter more sustainable and prosperous future.

After serving local and national nonprofit organizations for 10 years as executive director, development director and major gift officer,  I joined the Shain Group (formerly Myerberg, Shain & Associates), a national fundraising consulting firm, in 2007.

While with the Shain Group I primarily worked as lead consultant to the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), an Atlanta based organization, providing clinical pastoral education for spiritual care professionals of any faith in any setting. In that position I gained significant infrastructure and capacity building, campaign development, management and executive search experience.

Why I started Mark Lichterman Consulting, LLC

I founded Mark Lichterman Consulting, LLC (MLC) in 2011 to  guide the strategic planning, governance and fundraising needs of social services, cultural, environmental and health care nonprofits and family foundations.

MLC affords me the the time and energy necessary to remain personally involved to fully serve my client's needs from project conception through successful completion.

Hoping to Work With You:

I hope to have an opportunity to put my skills and experience to work for your organization.

My working Priorities

TO LISTEN CAREFULLY AND TAKE THE TIME TO UNDERSTAND YOUR STORIES

Listening is key.  I can't contribute until I fully understand your successes, failures and dreams.  As a first step in every new client relationship, I spend as much time as necessary to thoroughly understand your mission, your vision, your history and to meet and directly speak with all of your key players .

TO BE PERSONALLY INVOLVED IN YOUR PROJECT FROM START TO FINISH

When you engage my firm, you engage me.  As a result, I limit the number of clients that I work with at any given time to ensure that I have the time necessary to focus on your needs.

TO SET IMPLEMENTATION GOALS AND OBJECTIVES AND TO MEET EACH ONE- ON TIME AND ON BUDGET

Smart, aggressive, flexible and timely implementation of  plans and campaigns is the real key to your success.

TO WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM TODAY TO ENSURE YOUR SELF-SUFFICIENCY TOMORROW

Consulting engagements are by their very nature finite endevours.  That's why I will work with your leadership professionals and volunteers to teach the planning, fundraising and implementation skills that will guarantee the long term viability of the progress that we make together.

CLIENT SUCCESS STORIES

VALLEY ARTS, WAITSFIELD, VERMONT

"Working with Mark was one of the highlights of our project.  He took care to understand our goals, asked insightful questions and listened carefully to our needs.  By engaging Mark to conduct our community interviews we gained important and valuable information that allowed us to envision our future.  More than a consultant, Mark was a partner with Valley Arts, as we developed a strategy to realize our dreams of a community arts center."

Karen Nevin

Former Executive Director, Valley Arts & Current Executive Director of "Revitalizing Waterbury"

Valley Arts is a Vermont not-for-profit organization, whose mission is to support the multiple interests of the Mad River Valley by encouraging and promoting participation in the Arts.

  • MLC was engaged to conduct a fundraising and marketing feasibilty study;

KIDS KICKING CANCER, SOUTHFIELD, MICHIGAN

"We engaged Mark at a very tough time in our organizational history.  Operational cash flow was a very big challenge.  Among other things Mark negotiated, reestablished and stewarded the critically important relationship between the leadership of Kids Kicking Cancer and the Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation, leading to a $175,000 operating grant.  These funds allowed us to continue serving our mission while we rebuilt our fundraising operation."

Joel Kahn, M.D., Kids Kicking Cancer Board Member

Kids Kicking Cancer trains their students to see themselves as victors, not victims.  Using martial arts therapy, Kids Kicking Cancer (KKC) staff teaches ill children and their siblings to regain a sense of control over the chaos of their lives, to become empowered partners in their own healing and to push away the message of pain. Finally, as a part of their training, KKC students are taught to use the techniques that they've learned to  provide inspiration and light to others facing life-challenges.

MLC worked with KKC professional and board leadership to reimagine  and revitalize their stalled development efforts.

  • MLC led the effort to reestablish a strong working relationship with the professional leadership of the Children's Hospital Foundation of Michigan;
  • The renewed relationship led to landing a large 3 year operating grant from the Children's Hospital Women's Auxiliary

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is professional education for clergy of all faiths that takes place in the context of supervised encounters with persons in crisis.

 ACPE provides the highest quality CPE programs for spiritual care professionals of any faith and in any setting. They do this through a rigorous accreditation and certification process for centers and educators that provide CPE.

  • As the lead consultant with Myerberg Shain, I helped design and conduct a nationwide fundraising feasibility and marketing study;
  • I worked as a part of the team implementing a first time national campaign strategy;
  • I was subsequently appointed to the interim directorship of the Foundation for Clinical Pastoral Education (FCPE) following its creation as the sole funding entity for the ACPE;
